I am one of those people who believe that cartoons and graphic novels are art. I know many people will disagree with this, but then artists do tend to be snobs.
Sarah Mensinga has beautiful work in the style of Arthur Rackham cum Hayao Miyazaki. Her art has a childlike, ethereal beauty combined with perfect rendering and a exquisite colour palette. It is worth looking at even if you are of the ‘ART’ purist squad.
Mensinga is one of a growing number of women in the graphic novel/illustration gig, who are too few and far too undervalued. Female artists in any genre have a difficult time competing for attention, but choosing a profession as male dominated as this, is brave, foolhardy or shows an intense love of the craft. Or maybe all three.
